King James Version
The Authorized Version of 1611
The King James Version (KJV), also known as the Authorized Version, is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England, which was commissioned in 1604 and published in 1611 by sponsorship of King James I.
It became the standard Bible for English-speaking Protestants for nearly four centuries. The translation was carried out by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England.
The KJV is celebrated for its majestic prose, rhythmic cadence, and profound influence on English literature and language. Many common phrases in English today originated from this translation, including "salt of the earth," "fight the good fight," and "the powers that be."
